Latarnia presents CASTILIAN CRIMSON The Spanish Horror Film
|
|
The successful birth of the Spanish horror film was a long time coming, much like its Italian counterpart, with almost no dark fantastique emerging from Spain until the 1960s. But once given life, Spanish horror cinema produced some of the most talented, and at times controversial, voices in the genre and films that distinguished themselves from their European brethren with a harder-edged Iberian sensibility and passion. Names like Paul Naschy and Jess Franco are renowned now among cult-film cineastes, while other names (Amando de Ossorio, Narciso Ibanez Serrador, Eloy de la Iglesia, to name a few) are mentioned with greater frequency in cyberspace among travelers seduced by the macabre and the fantastic of foreign countries. In this new century, Spanish horror has reemerged with a new eagerness and nobility, exemplified by films like THE OTHERS, THE DEVIL'S BACKBONE, PAN'S LABYRINTH (the latter two films Spanish/Mexican co-productions), and THE ORPHANAGE. At the same time the medium of superior digital presentation takes in, with greater frequency, the deliciously threatening, yet magical, landscape of the Spanish horror film. Welcome to CASTILIAN CRIMSON.... Please note: Paul Naschy is one of the titans in Spanish horror/fantasy cinema. His importance is so overwhelming that a separate site, just dedicated to him and his films, is in operation at The Mark of Naschy. No study or converse of Spanish horror can aspire to be even remotely complete if it does not include this legend. e-mail: eurosin@aol.com BEST VIEWED WITH INTERNET EXPLORER Text copyright individual authors. Spanish Horror Filmography To be considered a "Spanish" horror film, a movie must, in general, have Spanish co-financing and be directed by a Spaniard or someone residing in Spain. "Horror" is a generic term that covers supernatural and terror films and those fantasies and mysteries which have a darker edge to them. Science fiction and horror comedies are included as warranted, as in certain cases they compliment or comment on, or share talent with, their serious horror brethren. Reviews are linked and can be situated on this site or on the Mark of Naschy site, if they star Paul Naschy; therefore, it is best to use your browser's back button to return to this page (something you must do if you find yourself at a URL which begins with www.naschy.com). The reviews found through the links below are the work of several people: Robert Monell, Denetia Arellanes, Mike Hodges, Francesco Cesari, Mario & Roderick Gauci, Eric Cotenas, Adam Williams, and myself, Mirek. Much thanks, compatriots. Special kudos to Robert Monell, who is filling the filmography up with reviews at an envious pace with no diminution in the quality of analysis, knowledge and insight.
